PNG is lossless, which is ideal for logos and interface screenshots but expensive for photos: a 4000 px photo saved as PNG can be 20 MB where a JPG would be 2 MB. Many forms also only accept JPG. Converting is a one-step fix when you do not need transparency.

The conversion flattens any transparent pixels onto white and encodes at the quality you choose. Text in screenshots stays sharp at 90% or higher; for photos, 80-85% is usually enough. If you need to hit a specific KB limit instead, use the image compressor, which accepts PNG directly.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the JPG background white where it used to be transparent?

JPG does not support transparency. If you need it, keep the PNG or use WebP.

Should I convert a logo to JPG?

Usually not. Flat graphics with sharp edges show JPG artefacts and often end up larger than the PNG. JPG is for photos and screenshots with gradients.

How much smaller will the file be?

Photos stored as PNG typically shrink 5-10x. Screenshots shrink 2-4x depending on how much flat colour they contain.
