Compress an image to any file size
Shrink JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC photos to an exact file size or quality level.
Drop a file here or click to browse
Accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, WEBP, HEIC, HEIF, GIF, BMP, AVIF. Up to 50.0 MB per file.
Most upload forms reject photos over a specific size: 100 KB for many government portals, 240 KB for a US visa photo, 2 MB for a job-board CV photo, 25 MB for an email attachment. A phone photo is typically 3 to 8 MB, so it almost always needs shrinking first.
This compressor lets you type the exact limit you were given. It re-encodes the image at decreasing quality until the file is at or under that number, and only reduces the pixel dimensions when quality alone is not enough. If you would rather pick a quality level yourself, switch the mode and drag the slider.
Everything runs inside your browser using a Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded, there is no queue, and the original file is not modified.
How to use it
- Drop your image on the upload area or click to browse. JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and GIF are accepted.
- Choose "Hit a target file size" and type the limit you need in KB (for example 200), or switch to quality mode and set a percentage.
- Pick an output format. Auto keeps WebP files as WebP and converts everything else to JPG, which is what most forms accept.
- Click Compress. The result card shows the new size, how much you saved and the final dimensions.
- Click Download. The file is saved with a "-compressed" suffix so your original stays untouched.
Frequently asked questions
Will the compressed image be exactly the size I typed?
It will be at or just under the target. The tool searches quality levels in a few steps and stops as soon as the file fits, so a 200 KB target usually lands between 180 and 200 KB. If even the lowest acceptable quality is too large, it scales the image down in 10% steps until it fits.
Why does a PNG come out as a JPG?
PNG is lossless, so its size cannot be controlled by a quality setting. To reach a size target the image has to be re-encoded with a lossy codec. JPG is the safest choice because every form and website accepts it. Transparent areas are flattened onto white. Choose WebP if the destination supports it; it is usually 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality.
Does compressing remove the location and camera data?
Yes. Re-encoding in the browser drops all EXIF metadata including GPS coordinates, camera model and the original timestamp. The orientation flag is applied to the pixels first so the photo does not end up sideways.
Is there a file size or resolution limit?
Free processing accepts images up to 50 MB. Images larger than 8192 pixels on the longest side are downscaled during decoding to keep memory use safe on phones; this rarely affects camera photos, which are usually 4000-6000 px wide.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The decoder and encoder run in a Web Worker in your browser tab. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the tool keeps working.
