Unlike shoes and rings, clothing sizes follow no international formula. Each country's labels drifted from its own body-measurement surveys, and brands then add their own "vanity sizing". What does exist is a set of conventions that most retailers' charts agree on, and that is what this converter uses: for women's tops and dresses UK = US + 4, EU (German/Dutch/Scandinavian) = US + 30, France and Spain = US + 32, Italy = US + 36 and Japan = US + 3; for men's suits and jackets EU, French and Italian sizes are the chest in inches plus 10; men's shirt collars are the neck size in inches in the US and UK and in centimetres (inches × 2.54) elsewhere.

Treat every result as approximate. Italian and Japanese brands in particular run small, and fast-fashion chains differ from each other by a full size. The reliable way to buy abroad is to measure your chest, waist and hips in centimetres or inches and compare them with the brand's own measurement table; use this converter to know where to start looking.

Frequently asked questions

What is a US 8 in UK sizes?

Usually a UK 12 in women's clothing (UK = US + 4), EU 38, French 40 and Italian 44. Brands vary by up to a size.

How do Italian sizes compare?

Italian women's sizes are about US + 36 (IT 44 ≈ US 8) and tend to run small. Men's Italian jacket sizes equal the EU size, chest in inches + 10 (a 40-inch chest is IT 50).

How do men's shirt sizes convert?

US and UK shirts are labelled by collar in inches; European and Japanese shirts by collar in centimetres. Multiply by 2.54: a 15½ collar is 39 cm, 16 is 41 cm.

Why are these conversions only approximate?

There is no binding international standard for clothing labels. The European standard EN 13402 recommends labelling with body measurements in cm, but most brands still use national sizes, so tables differ between retailers.
