Before posting a street photo, a classroom picture or a screenshot, hide what should not be public: faces of people who did not agree to be shown, number plates, addresses, names on badges, documents on a desk. Drag on the photo to draw a box over each area, move and resize boxes by their corners, then choose blur, pixelate or a solid black box and a strength. The effect is previewed live.

Uploading a photo to a website in order to anonymise it defeats the purpose, so this tool runs entirely in your browser. Automatic face detection is offered when your browser provides the FaceDetector API; most browsers do not enable it by default, and the tool says so. Manual boxes always work, with a mouse, a finger or the keyboard.

The download is a new image containing only the blurred pixels, so the hidden areas cannot be recovered from it, and EXIF metadata such as GPS location and camera details is not copied. For text such as account numbers, a solid box is the safest choice; strong pixelation is safer than light blur.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and more).
  2. Click "Detect faces automatically" if it is offered, and draw boxes over anything else: faces, plates, documents.
  3. Move or resize boxes, then pick blur, pixelate or solid, and the strength.
  4. Click "Apply and prepare download" and save the JPG or PNG.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed by your browser on your device; nothing is sent to a server. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it still works.

Can the blur be reversed?

Not from the downloaded file: it contains only the modified pixels. Light blurs of large text can sometimes be guessed, so use a higher strength, pixelate or a solid box for text and numbers.

Why is automatic detection not available?

It relies on the browser's experimental Shape Detection API, which most browsers do not enable by default. Manual boxes are always available.

Can I use it with the keyboard only?

Yes. Focus the photo, press N to add a box, move it with the arrow keys, resize with Shift and the arrows, switch boxes with [ and ], and delete with Delete.

Is the location metadata removed?

Yes. The image is redrawn and saved as a new file, so EXIF data such as GPS coordinates is not carried over.
