Your gratuity

Enter your last basic monthly salary and your start and end dates. The calculator applies Article 51 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021: 21 days of basic wage for each of the first five years of service, 30 days for each year after that, fractions of a year pro rata, and a cap of two years of basic wage. You need at least one full year of continuous service to qualify.

The daily wage is the basic monthly salary divided by 30, which is how the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) calculates it. Allowances are excluded by law, so a package of AED 15,000 with AED 10,000 basic is computed on 10,000. The breakdown shows the day rate, the years counted in each band, the uncapped total and whether the cap was applied.

The 2021 law (in force since 2 February 2022) removed two older rules that still circulate on the web: the reduction of gratuity for employees who resign, and the distinction between limited and unlimited contracts. Under the current law, resignation and termination by the employer produce the same figure. Employees in the DIFC and ADGM free zones are covered by their own savings schemes (for example DEWS in the DIFC) and should not use this calculator.

How to use it

  1. Type your last basic monthly salary in AED, without allowances.
  2. Set the employment start date and your last working day (leave the end date empty to use today).
  3. Read the gratuity figure. The table shows the day rate, the years counted at 21 and 30 days, both amounts, the cap and whether it applied.
  4. Copy the result for your records or to compare with the figure HR gives you.

Frequently asked questions

Is gratuity reduced if I resign?

Not under Federal Decree-Law 33/2021. The reductions for resignation (one-third and two-thirds) belonged to the previous 1980 law. Since February 2022 an employee who resigns after at least one year receives the full computed amount.

Does the 21-day and 30-day split use basic salary or total salary?

Basic salary only. Article 51 refers to the basic wage; housing, transport and other allowances are excluded. If your contract does not separate basic from allowances, ask HR which figure is registered with MOHRE.

How are partial years counted?

Pro rata. This calculator counts total days of service divided by 365; an HR system that counts full months may differ by a day or two. Days of unpaid leave are excluded from service under the law but are not deducted here, so subtract them from the period if you had any.

What is the two-year cap?

The total gratuity cannot exceed two years of basic wage, that is 24 times the basic monthly salary. With 21- and 30-day bands the cap starts to apply after about 25.5 years of service, so most people never reach it.

Does this apply in the DIFC and ADGM?

No. The DIFC operates the DEWS end-of-service savings scheme and the ADGM has its own employment regulations. Government employees and some domestic workers are also under different rules.

Is this figure final?

It is the statutory minimum computed from the law. Your contract can grant more, and unpaid leave, loans or damages can be offset in some cases. Treat it as a check on the figure your employer provides, not as legal advice.
