A new keyboard, a laptop after a spill, a mechanical switch that chatters: the quickest check is to press every key and see it register. Click into the test area, press keys, and each one lights up on a full-size diagram (US ANSI or UK/European ISO layout, including the function row, navigation cluster and numeric keypad) and stays shaded once tested, so you can see at a glance which keys you have not tried or which never register.

For each keystroke the page shows the key value, the physical key code and the location (left, right or numeric keypad), so you can tell the left Shift from the right one or the keypad Enter from the main Enter. A rollover counter records the most keys held at the same time, which is how you test ghosting and n-key rollover on gaming keyboards. Keys that stay reported as held for more than three seconds are flagged as possibly stuck.

Inside the test area the page blocks default actions such as Tab moving focus or Space scrolling, so those keys can be tested too; press Esc three times quickly to leave. Some keys, like Fn, most media keys and system shortcuts such as Alt+Tab, are handled by the operating system and never reach a web page.

How to use it

  1. Choose the ANSI (US) or ISO (UK/Europe) layout.
  2. Click the test area (or Tab to it), then press each key in turn and watch it light up.
  3. To test rollover, hold several keys together and check that all of them light up and the counter rises.
  4. Press Esc three times quickly to leave the test area, and use Reset to start over.

Frequently asked questions

What is keyboard ghosting?

Many keyboards cannot detect every combination of keys pressed together. When you hold several keys, some presses are ignored (blocking) or a key you did not press is reported (ghosting). Hold combinations you use, for example W, A, Shift and Space in games, and see whether all of them light up.

What does n-key rollover mean?

It is the number of keys a keyboard can report at the same time. Cheap membrane keyboards often manage 2 or 3 in some combinations; gaming keyboards advertise 6-key or full n-key rollover. Note that over USB some keyboards limit themselves to 6 keys plus modifiers.

Why does a key not light up?

Either it does not register (a hardware fault), or it never reaches the browser: Fn, brightness and media keys, Print Screen on some systems, and OS shortcuts are handled before the page sees them. The "Keys not on the diagram" line lists keys that arrived but are not drawn.

What is the difference between key and code?

The key is what the key types with your current layout (for example "a" or "ض"); the code is the physical position on a US-style keyboard (for example KeyA), which stays the same whatever layout you use. The diagram highlights by code.
