Discord's upload limit for accounts without Nitro was 8 MB for years, went up to 25 MB in 2023 and was reduced to 10 MB in 2024. 8 MB is still the number people remember, and a video under 8 MB uploads on every version of the limit, on Discord and on many forums and chat apps with similar caps. Nitro raises the limit substantially, but the person you send it to still needs the file to load quickly.

At 8 MB, a 30-second clip can have a healthy 2 Mbps bitrate at 720p; a 3-minute clip gets only about 350 kbps, so the tool automatically drops to 480p in that case to keep motion watchable. Trimming to the moment you actually want to share, with the video trimmer linked below, makes far more difference than any setting.

How to use it

  1. Drop the video (MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI or 3GP) or click to browse. The player reads its length.
  2. The target is preset to 8 MB; change it only if you know the limit is different.
  3. Optionally cap the resolution or pick "Fastest". Leave audio on unless you only need the picture.
  4. Click Compress and keep the tab open until the progress bar completes.
  5. Download the MP4 and share it. The result card shows the exact size and bitrate.

Frequently asked questions

What is Discord's current limit?

At the time of writing: 10 MB for free accounts, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and 500 MB with Nitro. An 8 MB file is under all of them. Check Discord's help centre for the current figures.

The clip looks blocky at 8 MB. What can I do?

Shorten it. Bitrate is size divided by time, so a clip half as long gets twice the bitrate. Removing audio also frees up around 100 kbps for the picture.

Does the output play inline on Discord?

Yes. H.264 in MP4 with faststart is what Discord's inline player supports on desktop and mobile.

How long does it take?

Encoding runs on one CPU core in your browser. A one-minute 1080p phone clip takes roughly one to three minutes on a laptop and longer on a phone. Choose "Fastest" or cap the resolution at 720p to speed it up.

Is my video uploaded?

No. FFmpeg runs as WebAssembly inside your browser. The 32 MB engine is downloaded once and cached; your video never leaves the device.
